Hatred

Rabbi Eisenman

This Vort is being written at 2:35 AM of Friday morning.

It is to prove to the world that there are things which can be done when you have jet lag!

One of the most difficult parts of the Torah is how to understand the incredible difficult story of the selling of Yosef. The Tur comments that even though the brothers may have had legitimate complaints about Yosef, nothing justifies their desire to actually kill him. Leaving aside medrashic explanations ,the Tur contends that we learn from here the scary concept of “hatred can destroy all normative and acceptable behavior “. Sinah meklkeles es HaShura” Hatred, or for that matter, any strong emotion consumes a person and makes them act in ways which would be totally inappropriate for them, in any normal situation. Ultimately, we know Hashem had His ways of saving Yosef.

However, it should never be lost on us the all-consuming power of the passion of hatred in all of its forms. Hatred is akin to walking around with a loaded Uzi on yourself. The heinous crimes committed while a person is under he influence of hatred have been well documented since the time of Kayin and Hevel.

We must be careful to be consistently on guard against the dangerous consequences that can come from being in a state of complete hatred. If you are very angry with someone, take a step back before you act, it can make all the difference in the world!

Wishing you all a wonderful Shabbos from Eretz Yisroel, and missing all of you!
